Fire Chief’s Command Post
Gone But Not Forgotten
Janet Wilmoth February 2nd, 2012

Passion for the fire service doesn’t end with retirement. Rather, it is cherished and kept alive in the hearts and memories of the men and women who put in many years answering calls through all kinds of weather, hazards and hardships. Retired firefighters tend to linger on the sidelines of firehouses across the country, ready to assist with a colorful story or lesson learned from their
years on the job.
Retired firefighters are sort of a forgotten legion, which is why I was so impressed several years
ago when I visited Phoenix and learned that the Retired Firefighters Association of Tucson
created the Last Alarm Foundation. The non-profit foundation was looking to purchase an
abandoned 1954 Mack L Model pumper and convert it into a fire engine/hearse to carry retired or
active firefighters to their “last alarm.”
The fire truck originally was owned by the Long Beach (Calif.) Fire Department and had been
abandoned in a lot near the desert. It took six years and hundreds of hours of labor and love to
restore and adapt the unit. A local businessman made an initial donation of $1,200 and Daniel
Matlick, owner of United Fire Equipment, helped the group achieve a 501c3 non-profit status.
Eventually, more than $300,000 was raised to complete the restoration.
Preferred Chassis Fabrication performed the restoration work, which included installing a one-ofa-
kind electric lift to safely raise and lower a casket on and off the vehicle. The first official use of
the vehicle was on Dec. 16, to carry the ashes of Jim Russell, a retired deputy chief and
restoration director of the fire engine/hearse.
The fire engine/hearse is available not only for retired or active duty firefighters, but family
members and law-enforcement personnel. The completion of the restoration is not the end for
this project and fundraising will continue to maintain, insure and operate the engine. Donations
can be made at www.lastalarmfoundation.org, where you also can look at photos of the project
from start to finish.
The Last Alarm project not only offers a unique vehicle to participate in funerals and memorials,
but it frees up local apparatus for continued service to their communities. This fire engine/hearse
is a fitting tribute to those who have served and to show that they are not forgotten for their
service.

By Janet Wilmoth, 08/16/2007

A few years ago, several retired firefighters from the Tucson (Ariz.) Fire Department decided that they should open a fire museum. Unfortunately, a lack of both money and a building to house the museum prohibited the idea. However, the men were determined to find a memorable project to work on, so they decided to buy an old fire truck and convert it to a hearse that could be used for retired firefighters’ funerals.

The retirees formed the Last Alarm Foundation Inc., a non-profit foundation that would fund their project and allow the Tucson community to express its appreciation for retired heroes at the same time. Assisting the retirees in this project is Daniel Matlick, development director for the foundation and president of United Fire, a safety equipment distributor in Tucson.

“Since it’s prohibitive to take an active fire truck out of service for funerals, having a designated and restored fire truck available would allow firefighters who did not die in the line of duty to have an honorable funeral,” Matlick said. “Those are frequently the last wishes that we are trying so hard to fulfill.”

After some negotiating, the retirees bought a 1954 Mack L model fire truck for $1,200. They removed the truck’s hosebed and designed a 32-inch lift on which a casket could be placed and raised.

“We have got to get it working really good because when you’re in a funeral parade, it can’t break down,” said Ed Montano, one of the project’s founders. “We got a bid to put in a new engine, drive-train [and] differential, and then we got another company that will do the painting for us.”

According to Montano, there are many retired firefighters from New York, Chicago and other parts of the country who now live in the Tucson area. These men and women could get an honorable burial using the fire truck hearse.

“We work on the truck two days a week, from 8 to 12, so it’s a slow process. When we’re done it will be worth $150,000,” said Montano, laughing. “Most of the time we spend time talking old war stories because we’re all retired firefighters.”

For more information about the foundation and the fire truck hearse project, go to www.lastalarmfoundation.org or call 520.305.1263.

But Tamayo would like to take one last ride on the back of one of those old pumpers, although it’s a trip
he’d like to put off for as long as possible.

The truck he has in mind is one restored to carry departed firefighters “with red lights flashing and sirens wailing, on to the eternal station,” fellow former firefighter J.R. Russell said in his poem “Last Alarm.”

Tamayo is a driving force behind a Tucson Retired Firefighters Association effort to restore an antique firetruck for “Last Alarm” duty. The association completed the first step last week, buying a 1954 Mack pumper truck it found at a salvage yard on the far South Side, where it’s been parked for 20 years.

Now the members need money and manpower to restore it to a condition befitting a final tribute to those who
dedicated their lives to helping others in emergencies, Russell said.

Tamayo and Russell, along with association President Ed Montaño, and fellow retirees Bill Martin and Dave
Spaulding, are the core of a group committed to getting the truck back on the road. Among them they have more than 134 years of Fire Department service.

A few months ago, Tamayo was talking to City Councilman Jose Ibarra, trying to drum up support for a fire museum, and decided to make a pitch for the Last Call truck, too. “He told me, ‘You find the truck, I’ll find the money,’ ” Tamayo said. They looked at trucks in half a dozen cities around Arizona and Northern Mexico, along with some on eBay, before finding one right in their own metaphorical back yard. It was at a salvage yard on South Nogales Highway, which Russell had seen when he drove past.

“Of all the ones we looked at, it turned out this is the one the honor guard really liked,” he said. The honor guard is 21 active-duty firefighters who serve as pallbearers and otherwise help with firefighter funerals.

Jerry Hammond, the truck’s former owner, brought it with him from Long Beach when he retired to Tucson in 1984 and parked it at the salvage yard. Ten years ago, Hammond moved to San Carlos, Mexico.

Once the firefighters found the truck, tracking the owner down in Mexico was another challenge, but they pulled it off. Ibarra was called on to negotiate with Hammond, who was asking $4,000. “After he realized what it was
going to be used for, he was very generous,” cutting the price to $1,200, Ibarra said.

Ibarra recruited Neil Capin of Capin’s Car Washes to put up the $1,200, allowing the firefighters to use their
money for the restoration. “It just sounded like a good cause that I wanted to support,” Capin said.

Russell said 20 years in the desert sun and a pack rat infestation have taken a toll on the truck. But if the
association members can line up the right contributions, either cash or goods and services, they hope to have it running within a year.

“We have a lot of retirees who are in poor health who’ve told me to ‘hurry up and get that truck done ’cause I might need it,’ ” Tamayo said. Tucson has about more than 300 retired firefighters, although not all are active in the association, and five or six die each year, Martin said. Active firefighters and those from
surrounding fire districts would also be welcome to use it, he said.

The space in back of the truck that would normally be filled with hose will be converted into a compartment to
hold a casket.

The group also envisions the truck appearing in parades and antique car shows and being used to promote
fire safety.

The retirees have the paint and chrome plating they need, but they lack a paint bay large enough to handle
the truck. They also need upholstery, tires, emergency lights and mechanical work.

Spaulding said having their caskets transported to the cemetery in a firetruck instead of a regular hearse would be an important symbol for a lot of firefighters. “We’re a family, more than most,” he said, “because of the time we spend together.”
